Colombia's Centro Democrático challenges 2027 budget proposal

The Centro Democrático party has called on the Colombian Congress to return the 2027 National General Budget project, submitted by the administration of Gustavo Petro, to allow for necessary corrections. The opposition argues that the proposed budget of approximately 575.6 trillion pesos is fundamentally flawed due to a projected revenue shortfall of 30.2 trillion pesos.

Critics highlight three major areas of concern regarding the fiscal projections: approximately 30.2 trillion pesos are categorized as contingent income that relies on a tax reform that has yet to be approved; 17 trillion pesos are listed as "Other capital resources" without clear origins; and 13 trillion pesos in capital rents lack required technical support.

Financial institutions, including the Banco de la República and the Comité Autónomo de la Regla Fiscal, have raised warnings regarding the consistency of these figures with the fiscal rule and the potential increase in public debt. Analysts suggest that beyond the immediate shortfall, additional borrowing of 118 trillion pesos might be required. The fiscal uncertainty has also drawn attention for its potential impact on foreign investment, particularly from Spanish companies operating in the country.
