Colombian coffee farmers lose income as dollar value falls

The Colombian peso strengthened on June 5, 2026, with the market exchange rate (TRM) set at 3,565.32 pesos per US dollar, a 0.21% decline from the previous day and 13.21% lower than a year earlier.

The lower dollar price has sharply cut earnings for the country's coffee sector. The Federación Nacional de Cafeteros estimates that about 557,000 coffee‑growing families, including more than 17,000 in Norte de Santander, face an income loss of roughly 17%, with each coffee load losing over $400,000 in value. Production growth in May showed a 29% increase over the same month a year earlier, but overall output remains down 14% year‑to‑date, with a 19% drop compared with the previous year.
