Colombia's De la Espriella administration plans banking reforms and health system overhaul

Vice‑president‑elect José Manuel Restrepo met with the board of the banking association Asobancaria, led by Jonathan Malagón, to discuss a package of measures for the new government. The agenda includes lowering the usury rate on consumer and commercial loans, ending “borrón y cuenta nueva” practices, expanding formal credit, and strengthening safeguards against cyber‑attacks and fraud. As one participant noted, “El borrón y cuenta nueva beneficia a unos pocos a costa de muchos.”

The De la Espriella government also presented an ambitious health‑sector plan to address the crisis facing Colombia’s EPS insurers. President‑elect Abelardo De la Espriella said a financial injection of roughly 10 trillion pesos will be used to improve specialist appointments, medication delivery and primary‑care services. The plan calls for redistributing resources, accelerating the resolution of EPS debts, and preparing criminal complaints against officials deemed responsible for the previous administration’s shortcomings. These actions are slated for the first 90 days of the new mandate.
