Colombia's DIMAR issues Pacific coast flood alert

The Colombian Maritime Authority (DIMAR) has issued an alert for the Pacific coast due to the sizigial tide phenomenon, expected to occur between August 11 and August 19, 2026. This phenomenon, driven by the new moon phase, causes significant fluctuations in sea levels.

Coastal communities in the departments of Cauca, Chocó, Nariño, and Valle del Cauca are at risk of flooding. Specific areas of concern include Bahía Solano, Guapi, Juanchaco in Buenaventura, and Tumaco. The highest impact is anticipated on Saturday, August 15, with projected sea levels reaching 4.91 meters in Buenaventura, 4.06 meters in Bahía Solano, and 3.98 meters in Tumaco.

Authorities have warned that the combination of high tides and intense marine currents may pose risks to small vessels, artisanal fishermen, and beach tourism. Maritime sectors, port societies, and tourists are advised to follow safety instructions and exercise extreme caution to prevent risks to human life.
