Colombia's Defensores de la Patria Granted Official Party Status
The Consejo Nacional Electoral (CNE) voted 6‑1 to grant legal personhood to Defensores de la Patria, the political movement of President‑elect Abelardo De la Espriella. The ruling recognises the group as a formal political party, inscribing it in the Registro Único de Partidos y Movimientos Políticos and allowing it to receive state financing and to endorse candidates in upcoming regional elections slated for October 2027.
The CNE based its decision on the movement’s presidential vote total—over 12 million votes in the 2026 runoff—citing Constitutional article 108 and the Supreme Court’s Sentencia SU‑316 (2021), which permits presidential vote counts to satisfy the 3 % threshold for party registration. The party’s leadership will include Camilo Andrés Noguera as director, with the petition filed by lawyer Nicolás Farfán. The new party now has the legal capacity to participate fully in Colombia’s electoral system.
This development consolidates the political base of the incoming administration and sets the stage for Defensores de la Patria’s participation in the 2027 regional contests.
