Colombia's Electoral Observation Mission begins monitoring for 2027 elections
The Electoral Observation Mission (MOE) has officially begun preparations to oversee Colombia's 2027 regional elections. The process includes the registration of voter IDs, which is scheduled to commence on October 31.
Under the direction of Alejandra Barrios Cabrera, the MOE aims to monitor the registration process monthly to detect and prevent 'trashumancia electoral' (voter migration), a practice that can distort local election results. The organization plans to deploy 34 regional coordinations to maintain a presence across the national territory, focusing specifically on municipalities identified as having high or extreme risks to political freedom.
The MOE seeks to provide periodic reports to electoral authorities to ensure suspicious cases are addressed early. This proactive approach aims to prevent the legal uncertainty and public disturbances that have previously occurred when voter registration cancellations are handled too late in the electoral cycle.
