Colombia's Energy Ministry rolls out El Niño preparedness plan for power and gas

The Colombian Ministry of Mines and Energy announced two draft resolutions aimed at strengthening the country's preparedness for the El Niño weather phenomenon and ensuring continuous electricity and natural‑gas supply. The measures are part of a broader strategy that has involved 36 coordination sessions and 53 actions to improve the security and reliability of the national energy system.

Key components include the creation of a special committee to monitor reservoir levels, electricity demand and system capacity, a household‑incentive scheme that rewards lower electricity consumption and penalises excessive use, and specific steps to maintain gas supply while the Cartagena regasification plant undergoes scheduled maintenance. The Cartagena plant provides roughly 40 % of Colombia's imported gas, making its reliable operation critical for both power generation and industrial needs.
