Colombia's Feria de las Flores Showcases Hummingbird Biodiversity

The Feria de las Flores opens with the theme “Colombia, country of the birds,” curated by the Sociedad Antioqueña de Ornitología (SAO) and presented by Adriana González, manager of El Tesoro. The event highlights Colombia’s record number of hummingbird species, noting the birds’ ability to beat their wings up to 78 times per second and hover in any direction. Exhibits feature 3D‑printed hummingbird models, handcrafted habitats with orchids, bromeliads and ferns, a commercial fair of traditional artisans, and an immersive Bosque Sonoro tunnel that plays the calls of native birds such as the currucutú and tucán.

Separately, an online quiz invites participants to test their knowledge of hummingbird physiology and ecology. It covers the birds’ precise flight mechanics, extreme energy demands, role in pollination, and the scientific methods used to study them, including high‑speed video and lightweight tracking. The quiz underscores ongoing scientific interest in how hummingbirds connect plant reproduction and ecosystem health.
