Colombia's JEP faces budget cuts and scrutiny over costs
Debate is intensifying in Colombia regarding the future and financing of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), the judicial body established following the 2016 peace agreement with the FARC.
Interior Minister Rodrigo Lara has called for the JEP to conclude its operations, arguing that the institution is inherently transitory and has already fulfilled its cycle. This stance aligns with a government proposal to cut the entity's budget by 170 billion pesos.
Former President Juan Manuel Santos has expressed opposition to the sudden elimination of the JEP, emphasizing the state's constitutional obligation to honor the peace agreement. While Santos supports the JEP's mandate through 2033, he has also noted that the body must accelerate its processes to address criticisms of its perceived slowness.
Concurrently, Senator María Clara Posada has raised concerns regarding the JEP's financial management. She reported that the institution has cost 3.8 trillion pesos while producing only 21 sentences, with just four being final. Posada also highlighted significant expenditures, including 160,005 million pesos in lease contracts for Torre Squadra between 2017 and 2026 and a projected 2026 payroll of 404,477 million pesos.
