Colombia's JEP faces budget cuts under President Abelardo de la Espriella

President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella has criticized the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), calling it a "political directory" and suggesting the institution could be defunded. His statements have raised concerns that the new government may reduce or eliminate funding for the JEP, which is the judicial component of the 2016 peace agreement with the FARC.

JEP president Alejandro Ramelli warned that undermining the tribunal would jeopardize victims' access to truth, justice and reparations, and could weaken the broader system of mechanisms created by the accord, including the Unit for Victims, land restitution and the National Historical Memory Center. Ramelli emphasized that the JEP enjoys constitutional protection, but its continued operation depends on sufficient budgetary support.

Analysts note that any substantial cut to the JEP could threaten Colombia's transitional justice process, potentially increasing insecurity for former combatants and social leaders, and eroding the peace settlement's durability.
