Colombia's JEP imposes sanctions on former FARC commanders

The Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) in Colombia has initiated the application of restorative sanctions against seven former FARC commanders. These sanctions, which do not include prison time, range from five to eight years and involve activities such as assisting in the search for missing persons at the San Antonio de Padua cemetery in Pitalito, Huila, and performing memory-related tasks in Bogotá.

Among those sanctioned are Rodrigo Londoño (Timochenko) and Pablo Catatumbo, both receiving eight-year terms. Other former leaders, including Pastor Alape and Rodrigo Granda, will perform manual labor such as excavation and soil sifting to support specialized search teams. Victims' organizations in Huila have expressed dissatisfaction, arguing that these restorative measures fail to prioritize the essential truth regarding the exact whereabouts of the disappeared.

In a separate development, the JEP has imputed war crimes and crimes against humanity to five other former FARC commanders. These charges relate to a pattern of sexual violence and gender-based crimes committed in the northern Cauca and southern Valle del Cauca regions. The investigation, part of Case 05, documented 68 victimizing acts against 35 individuals, including instances of forced contraception and forced abortions, which the JEP classified as acts of torture and outrages against personal dignity.
