Colombia's JEP refutes FARC claims of humane hostage treatment

The Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) has responded to statements made by Rodrigo Londoño, also known as Timochenko, regarding the treatment of hostages held by the FARC-EP. In a closed hearing, Londoño claimed that the organization maintained internal criteria to ensure the good treatment of captives, denying the practice of torture.

However, the JEP stated that its investigations into Case 01, which focuses on kidnappings by the FARC-EP, contradict these claims. The tribunal documented that victims were subjected to various forms of violence, including torture, cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment, homicide, forced disappearance, and sexual violence. While internal guidelines for "good treatment" may have existed, the JEP found they were not effectively applied in practice.

In a separate context, discussions regarding the JEP have emerged concerning its efficiency and cost. Supporters of the tribunal argue that it has been more effective than the traditional justice system in addressing crimes from the 70-year conflict, noting that the institution faces political opposition due to the sensitive truths it uncovers regarding both guerrilla and military actions.
