Abelardo De La Espriella probes alleged Clan del Golfo links during Colombia's transition

President‑elect Abelardo De La Espriella has ordered a full legal and institutional review of alleged contacts between the outgoing Petro administration and the criminal organization Clan del Golfo. He instructed Vice‑president‑elect José Manuel Restrepo, who will lead the “Empalme Anticorrupción”, to gather evidence, assess criminal and disciplinary liability and, if warranted, forward the information to the U.S. Department of Justice and relevant international bodies.

De La Espriella also announced the start of the government transition, with Restrepo coordinating the hand‑over and demanding a halt to provisional diplomatic appointments. The outgoing government, represented by President Gustavo Petro, responded by defending its record and warning that the incoming administration faces a severe security challenge. De La Espriella has given armed groups a one‑month deadline to demobilise, warned of a “forceful” response if they refuse, and signalled a review of retired military and police officers for possible reinstatement. The election has been noted as part of a broader shift toward ultraright leaders across Latin America.

These actions mark the first steps of a new right‑wing government in Colombia, focusing on security, anti‑corruption measures and a re‑evaluation of past peace‑process policies.
