Colombia's Medellín and Yopal grapple with heightened security and public‑space challenges

The Medellín City Council highlighted public‑security measures in the city centre, noting the deployment of 101 surveillance cameras and a 68 % drop in personal theft in Villanueva. Councilor Brisvani Arenas warned that despite these gains, homicides in Villanueva have risen and theft against persons in the Guayaquil area jumped 90 %, underscoring the need for more institutional presence and better coordination among district agencies.

In Yopal, the relocation of homeless residents to Carrera 33 triggered a spike in robberies, assaults and other violent incidents across several neighbourhoods, according to community leader Yas Rosas. Residents appealed for additional police patrols and a city‑wide CCTV system to curb the surge in crime, noting that existing security measures are uneven and that many zones lack sufficient police staffing.
