Colombia's New UNP Director Faces Backlash Over Journalist Protection

Didier Blanco, a lawyer, psychologist and former mayoral candidate from Ibagué, was appointed by President‑elect Abelardo de la Espriella to lead the Unidad Nacional de Protección (UNP), the agency tasked with safeguarding journalists, social leaders, human‑rights defenders, politicians and former FARC combatants. Past social‑media posts by Blanco include offensive remarks toward the media outlet La Silla Vacía, journalists and left‑wing figures, using phrases such as "zurdos de mierda." The appointment triggered criticism from journalists, former officials and members of Congress who questioned his ability to guarantee impartial protection. Notable voices such as journalist Daniel Coronell and ex‑Justice Minister Jorge Iván Cuervo warned that Blanco's history could undermine confidence in the UNP’s mission.
