Colombia's Ombudsman calls for investigation into threats against prison officials
The Colombian Ombudsman's Office has requested that the Attorney General's Office urgently investigate an intimidating pamphlet targeting officials of the National Penitentiary and Prison Institute (Inpec). This request follows an explosive attack on an Inpec vehicle in Barranquilla, which injured two officers, Shirly Dallana Acosta Marroquín and Daniel Steven Tapiero Alférez.
The human rights organization warned of a pattern of violence against prison staff, noting previous attacks in cities such as Bogotá, Cali, and Cartagena. The Ombudsman stated that these intimidations appear intended to influence government decisions, specifically regarding the transfer of inmates to regain control of correctional facilities.
In addition to the investigation, the office has called for a comprehensive protection plan involving the Ministry of Justice, the National Police, and the National Protection Unit to provide security, risk assessments, and psychological support for officials and their families.
