Colombia President‑Elect De la Espriella suspends transition with outgoing Petro

President‑elect Abelardo de la Espriella ordered an immediate suspension of the presidential transition (empalme) with outgoing President Gustavo Petro after Petro publicly refused to recognize the election results and repeatedly alleged electoral fraud. De la Espriella said the move was to protect the nation’s interests and ensure a transparent hand‑over.

Petro continued to claim that the June 21, 2026 runoff was manipulated by algorithms and foreign financing, naming Iván Cepeda as the true winner and warning of possible extradition and legal actions. The suspension halted technical meetings between the two teams, delayed the exchange of budgetary and operational information, and raised doubts about the continuity of government functions.

Business groups and financial analysts warned that the impasse could affect the regulatory certainty needed for major investments, including Spanish‑backed projects worth billions of euros. The vice‑president‑elect José Manuel Restrepo affirmed that the incoming administration would keep preparing internally, while opposition leaders called for civil disobedience if De la Espriella did not meet their demands. Legal complaints were also announced by the president‑elect’s team to address alleged irregularities in the information provided by the outgoing administration.
