Colombia's Pacific coast faces flood alert due to rising sea levels

The Colombian Maritime Authority (DIMAR), through the Pacific Oceanographic and Hydrographic Research Center (CCCP), has issued a flood alert for the Colombian Pacific coast. Between August 27 and September 4, 2026, a significant rise in sea levels is expected due to the full moon phase, causing a phenomenon known as a syzygy tide.

The interaction of high tides and increased marine currents may cause flooding in coastal sectors, particularly near Bahía Solano, Guapi, Juanchaco in Buenaventura, and Tumaco. The highest sea levels are projected for Monday, August 31, with estimated heights of 4.67 meters in Buenaventura, 3.91 meters in Bahía Solano, and 3.78 meters in Tumaco.

Authorities have advised coastal communities, maritime workers, artisanal fishermen, and tourists to strengthen safety measures and follow official instructions. Risks are also noted during the ebbing tide, which may affect small vessels and beach activities.
