Colombia's Petro administration faces mounting corruption scandals
Corruption investigations have become a central issue as President Gustavo Petro's term ends. The justice system is probing the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) for alleged misuse of public contracts to divert funds and secure political support. Former UNGRD officials have accepted charges and are cooperating with authorities.
Additional probes involve the financing of Petro's 2022 presidential campaign, the legal case against Ecopetrol chief Ricardo Roa, illegal wiretaps known as the “chuzadas” targeting former minister Laura Sarabia, and investigations of Petro's brother Nicolás. Internationally, Colombia slipped from rank 92 to 99 in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index, losing two points from the previous year, reflecting eroding public confidence in state institutions.
