Colombia's President‑elect Abelardo de la Espriña Secures US Backing and Seeks Congressional Coalition

The Centre Democratic party in Colombia announced plans to form a parliamentary coalition backing President‑elect Abelardo de la Espriña. Senator Paloma Valencia, former President Álvaro Uribe and party leaders said the coalition will promote legal certainty, private‑sector growth, low‑tax fiscal austerity and social cohesion to rebuild the country’s economy.

In parallel, U.S. Republican Senator Bernie Moreno met de la Espriña in Barranquilla, confirming strong support from the Trump administration. Moreno highlighted a forthcoming "energy renaissance," pledged U.S. assistance for economic development, and pledged to lead the U.S. delegation at the inauguration on 7 August. The discussion also covered migration, with Moreno stating that Colombian asylum seekers should return and that the United States will welcome legal migrants. He hinted at possible U.S. sanctions against outgoing President Gustavo Petro, while praising Colombia’s electoral institutions.
