Colombia's Procuraduría warns of $1.84 trillion peso deficit in FOMAG fund

The Procuraduría General de la Nación has issued a preventive alert regarding a projected $1.84 trillion peso deficit in the National Fund for Social Benefits of the Teaching Profession (FOMAG). The shortfall threatens the health services and economic benefits provided to teachers and their beneficiaries.

The alert coincides with the upcoming expiration of the fund's fiduciary contract on October 31, 2026. The oversight body has demanded that the FOMAG Board of Directors explain the measures being taken to ensure the continuous administration of resources and to prevent interruptions in medical services and benefit payments.

While the FOMAG Board recently approved a budget transfer of $859 billion pesos from pensions to health—increasing the health budget from approximately $3.7 trillion to $4.6 trillion pesos—it remains insufficient to cover projected needs for 2026. The Procuraduría has requested detailed information on requests made to the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit, including the status of these procedures and contingency plans in the event that funds are not secured in time.
