Colombia's rapid fintech payments raise e‑commerce fraud concerns

Fintech adoption in Colombia has accelerated, with the Superintendencia Financiera reporting that digital and mobile transactions rose from 35.7% to 66.6% of the financial system’s volume between 2021 and 2025. The Banco de la República’s Bre‑B instant‑payment system now enables real‑time transfers at low cost, raising user expectations for speed in online casinos, digital stores and other internet‑based services.

A study by Koin, a fraud‑prevention firm, warns that the surge in e‑commerce activity also brings higher fraud risk. The report estimates that chargeback‑related losses in Colombia could reach US$43 million in 2025 and US$48 million in 2026. E‑commerce sales in the country are projected to grow 22% in 2025, outpacing regional averages. The study highlights major platforms such as MercadoLibre, Amazon, Rappi and local retailers, and notes that Latin America and Europe experience some of the highest relative fraud rates worldwide.
