Colombia's REEV sales jump 128% as Latin America expands electric bus fleets

In July 2026 Colombian registrations of range‑extended electric vehicles (REEV) from Deepal and Changan rose 128.3% year‑on‑year to 331 units, while total new‑vehicle registrations grew 23.8% to 27,325. The surge is driven by REEV technology that offers electric‑only driving for most trips and a combustion generator for longer ranges. Juan Carlos López, General Manager of Deepal and Changan Colombia, said the technology “offers significant operating‑cost savings by allowing most trips to be made in electric mode without autonomy anxiety.”

Across the region, public‑transport electrification is accelerating. Bogotá’s TransMilenio awarded a contract for 269 fully electric buses in July 2026 and already operates more than 1,500 electric buses, with another 700 planned for 2026‑27. Santiago de Chile, São Paulo, Mexico City and Medellín are also scaling up electric bus purchases, supported by programs such as the ZEBRA accelerator and international climate‑finance mechanisms. The combined push in private and public sectors marks a major shift toward cleaner mobility in Latin America.
