Colombia's Registraduría cancels 83 IDs due to false identity

The Registraduría Nacional del Estado Civil in Colombia has strengthened its identity controls to prevent fraud and protect citizens' rights. Since 2025, the agency has implemented one-to-one facial recognition during the document issuance process to verify that applicants match existing database images.

In addition to facial recognition, the agency uses an alert model to identify atypical requests, such as citizenship ID applications that lack a prior history of identity card issuance. These measures have led to the cancellation of 83 IDs due to false identity as of August 10, 2026, following 105 cancellations of foreign citizens' IDs in 2025. The agency also highlighted the security benefits of the digital citizenship ID, which utilizes polycarbonate and advanced security standards to prevent forgery.
