Colombia's Sport Programs Reach Over One Million Participants

In the past year, Colombia's Ministry of Sport reported that 1.181 million people benefited from public sport promotion and development programmes, backed by investments of tens of billions of pesos. The Inter‑School National Games set a record with 643 000 children enrolled, while the Complementary School Sports Day enrolled over 123 000 participants. Physical‑activity initiatives engaged 368 000 Colombians, recreation programmes aided 34 000, and community sport agreements helped more than 13 000 people, 63 % of whom are women.

The University of Magdalena’s SportSci Club, part of the university’s High‑Performance Research Center, now serves over 180 athletes from a range of disciplines. The interdisciplinary team offers medical, nutritional, psychological and physiotherapy support using advanced equipment. Director Laionel Polo Alvarado said, “Utilizamos una metodología orientada hacia la personalización del entrenamiento, que cuenta con el acompañamiento, la valoración y la intervención de profesionales expertos en ciencias aplicadas al deporte.” Young athlete Geovaldi José Vanegas Castaño noted, “He avanzado mucho… ahora puedo entrenar hasta 25 minutos.” The club also supports regional clubs, schools and independent athletes across Santa Marta and the department.
