Colombia's transitional justice efforts praised by UN official
United Nations official Volker Türk has praised the restorative measures implemented by Colombia’s Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) as a global achievement for transitional justice. Ten years after the signing of the Final Peace Agreement, these measures aim to promote victims' rights and foster sustainable peace.
In a notable collaborative effort, former members of the FARC-EP and former military personnel are working together at the San Antonio de Padua cemetery in Pitalito, Huila, to locate and identify missing persons. Under the 2016 peace pact, individuals who acknowledge responsibility for serious crimes may fulfill restorative sanctions instead of traditional imprisonment.
Amidst a shifting political landscape in Colombia, legal and human rights organizations are convening to discuss the future of peacebuilding, gender perspectives in justice, and the protection of indigenous rights. These discussions follow recent changes in government policy and the cessation of negotiations with certain factions of the National Liberation Army (ELN).
