Colombia’s coach Néstor Lorenzo said the team’s elimination in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup was due to a "lack of goals." The South American side lost to Switzerland on penalties (4‑3) after a 0‑0 draw in regulation and extra time in Vancouver, Canada. Lorenzo praised the squad’s identity and commitment, highlighting players such as Luis Díaz, Jhon Arias and Luis Suárez, while acknowledging the missed chances.

Striker Luis Suárez, who plays for Sporting CP, was a key figure at the tournament, appearing for 332 minutes across three matches. Over the 2025/2026 season he accumulated more than 5,000 minutes for club and country, scoring 43 goals and providing eight assists. His heavy workload and performance were noted as a testament to his importance for both Colombia and his Portuguese club.
