Colombia's World Cup sparks fan anxiety and political split

A survey by Universidad Manuela Beltrán found that 50.3% of Colombian respondents reported anxiety, stress or strong tension during important matches of the national football team, and 75.5% said they experienced a high emotional load. The study also noted that 27.4% reacted impulsively, such as shouting or striking objects, and 8.2% reported arguments with family or partners over football.

At the same time, political polarization surrounding the team has grown. Many supporters have avoided public celebrations, refused to wave flags or pose for photos, and some have stopped wearing the yellow jersey because it has become associated with partisan politics. The situation reflects a broader split in public sentiment as players' political statements and campaign symbolism have turned the national team into a contested emblem rather than a unifying symbol.
