Colombo police to enforce bus priority lanes from Tuesday

Police in Colombo and surrounding areas will begin strict enforcement of bus priority lane regulations starting Tuesday, September 29. The initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion during peak hours across seven priority lanes in the Western Province.

According to ASP Manoj Ranagala of the Police Traffic Control and Road Safety Division, the lanes are operational from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. During these windows, other vehicles are prohibited from using or parking in the lanes, except when navigating emergencies, accidents, severe congestion, or making necessary turns. The lanes are available to Metro buses and other passenger transport buses.

To support the service, Metro Bus Chairman S. M. U. P. Thilakaratne announced that 104 luxury buses will be added to the Metro service on September 29 to improve passenger convenience for those traveling to Colombo.
