Colonel Zoran Zrnić defends legacy of Ratko Mladić

Colonel Zoran Zrnić, who served in Ratko Mladić’s security detail for five years starting in 1992, has defended the late general’s character. In statements to the media, Zrnić claimed there is no written evidence, command, recording, or witness that could implicate Mladić in ordering the killing, mistreatment, or torture of civilians or prisoners.

Zrnić described Mladić as a strict but humane leader who frequently interacted with local populations in villages to check on their welfare. He noted that although he was not permitted to testify during Mladić’s trial in The Hague, he believes his testimony would not have changed the outcome.

Mladić passed away on August 27 in The Hague and was buried on September 7 in the family tomb at Topčidersko Cemetery in Belgrade.
