Colonia and Santa Fe launch bilateral tourism cooperation project

The Department of Colonia in Uruguay and the Province of Santa Fe in Argentina have launched a joint international cooperation project aimed at strengthening bilateral tourism and productive development. The initiative focuses on two main pillars: identity-based agro-food tourism and Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism.

Under this agreement, Santa Fe seeks to adopt Colonia’s successful model of the ‘Cheese Route’ to bolster its own Blue Cheese Region, linking local production with territorial identity. Conversely, Colonia aims to leverage Santa Fe’s expertise in event planning and management to expand its capacity for hosting large-scale congresses, sporting events, and business meetings. This strategy is intended to drive demand for local services such as accommodation and transport during non-peak seasons.

A technical delegation from Colonia recently visited Santa Fe to study event management facilities and regional production models. The cooperation project is scheduled to continue until October 2027, utilizing a ‘Smart Tourist Destination’ approach to promote sustainable and innovative management through public-private partnerships.
