Argentina marks 50 years of 'La Noche de los Lápices' student disappearances

Argentina marks the 50th anniversary of 'La Noche de los Lápices,' a period in September 1976 when several high school students were kidnapped, tortured, and disappeared by the military dictatorship in La Plata. The victims, aged 16 to 18, were primarily members of student organizations and had been involved in protests for the secondary student fare (Boleto Estudiantil Secundario).

Commemorations took place across the country, including large marches in La Plata and Rosario, and community activities in Quilmes, Posadas, and Necochea. In La Plata, Governor Axel Kicillof joined survivors and human rights leaders, such as Estela de Carlotto, to honor the victims and emphasize the importance of democratic memory. While four students survived the ordeal, six remain disappeared.

Modern student groups used the anniversary to voice current demands regarding education budgets, teacher salaries, and student rights, linking the historical struggle for justice to contemporary political and social challenges in Argentina.
