Colonia Express announces direct Montevideo-Buenos Aires ferry service
Colonia Express has announced progress in establishing a direct maritime connection between Montevideo and Buenos Aires. The company stated that its vessel, the Montevideo Express, is already navigating the Río de la Plata and that ticket sales for the daily round-trip service for passengers and vehicles could begin within approximately two weeks.
The project involves a catamaran capable of carrying roughly 600 passengers and 70 vehicles, representing an investment of approximately US$ 12 million. While the Ministry of Transport and Public Works authorized the international service in July, operational implementation faced delays regarding docking capabilities in Montevideo.
There is currently a discrepancy between the company and port authorities regarding technical readiness. Colonia Express claims it has received formal authorization to use a vehicle ramp installed directly on the vessel. However, the National Port Administration (ANP) stated that this specific ramp has not yet been reviewed or approved by its board of directors.
