Colonie Police Chief criticizes mental health system
Colonie Police Chief James Gerace is criticizing the local mental health system following an armed suicide attempt by a woman on September 25. Officers responded to a call where the woman threatened self-harm with a knife. While officers successfully managed the encounter and transported the woman to a hospital, Gerace reported that she was back in the community within 12 hours.
Gerace questioned the adequacy of psychiatric commitment processes and the lack of follow-up safety plans, describing the current situation as a “collapsed mental health system” and a “hospital revolving door.” Despite the criticism of the system, the Chief praised the officers and dispatchers involved for their restraint and tactical discipline during the dangerous encounter.
