Color markings on new tires serve internal manufacturing purposes
Colored stripes in blue, red, or yellow found on new tires are internal manufacturing tools rather than consumer information. According to the German marking equipment provider REA, these automated lines are used to classify materials and finished products during the production process.
These markings help workers and machinery distinguish between different rubber components and tire types. Because there is no universal industry standard, the meaning of a specific color varies by manufacturer; a blue stripe on one brand may signify something entirely different on another.
In some patented marking processes, combinations of two colors are used to identify specific surface compounds. Once tires are installed on a vehicle, these marks serve no further purpose and eventually wear away through use. Consumers should instead rely on the technical specifications printed on the tire sidewall.
