Colorado Anschutz Trial Finds Automated Oxygen System Boosts Patient Care
A University of Colorado Anschutz-led multicenter trial enrolled 300 adult patients receiving supplemental oxygen at four U.S. hospitals. Participants were randomly assigned to an autonomous oxygen‑titration device, the O2matic PRO100, or to standard clinician‑managed care. Over the 72‑hour observation period, patients using the automated system spent 85% of the time within the prescribed oxygen saturation range (target 93%, acceptable 90‑96%) compared with 63% for the manual‑care group, while also reducing exposure to both low and high oxygen levels.
The study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine and presented at the Military Health System Research Symposium, was led by Dr. Adit Ginde. The O2matic PRO100, a Danish‑manufactured device with a European CE mark, operated under an FDA investigational device exemption and is awaiting U.S. market clearance. Researchers suggest the technology could fundamentally change supplemental oxygen delivery in both civilian and military medical settings.
