Cale Makar contract negotiations progressing with Colorado Avalanche

Colorado Avalanche president and general manager Joe Sakic expressed high confidence that superstar defenseman Cale Makar will sign a contract extension before the start of the upcoming NHL season. Makar, a two-time Norris Trophy winner, is currently in the final year of a six-year, $54 million contract and is eligible for an extension.

Negotiations are expected to be influenced by the rising NHL salary cap, which is projected to reach $104 million for the 2026-27 season and $113.5 million by 2027-28. Analysts suggest Makar’s new deal could significantly increase his current $9 million annual average value (AAV).

A key factor in the timing of the deal is the September 16 deadline regarding the NHL's collective bargaining agreement. If signed before this date, Makar could potentially secure an eight-year term; after this date, the maximum allowable term for such an extension drops to seven years. Sakic noted that dialogue between the club and Makar’s camp has been “great” and that neither side is concerned about the current timeline.
