Colorado Avalanche goaltending depth grows with Ilya Nabokov

The Colorado Avalanche goaltending depth is expanding as prospect Ilya Nabokov begins his first full season in North America. Nabokov, who previously played five seasons in the KHL, is expected to compete for time with the AHL Eagles, as he currently sits behind NHL tandem Scott Wedgewood and Mackenzie Blackwood.

Analysts note that the Avalanche system currently features four developing goaltenders: Blackwood, Wedgewood, Trent Miner, and Nabokov. While Blackwood is expected to carry a significant load, Nabokov’s performance in the AHL could position him to challenge for a role in the NHL tandem by the 2027-28 season. Nabokov has stated he has no intention of returning to the KHL and is focused on reaching the NHL.
