Colorado ballot initiatives see surge in organized group activity
Colorado voters are preparing to receive mail-in ballots containing a significant number of initiatives. This year, the state ballot features as many as 14 initiatives, a rare occurrence in state history.
Reports indicate that a large portion of these measures are driven by well-funded organizations rather than grassroots citizen efforts. Specifically, the group Advance Colorado has reportedly spent millions of dollars on paid canvassers to place eight initiatives on the ballot. Additionally, the organization Protect Kids Colorado has placed three measures on the ballot and is currently facing a campaign finance complaint regarding the disclosure of its spending on canvassers.
Historically, Colorado's ballot initiative process has been used for both significant legislative progress, such as establishing strict ethical standards for government officials, and controversial measures that have faced legal challenges.
