Additionally, in Custer County, authorities had to rescue a young bear from a power pole after it became stranded.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife reports a 68% increase in bear sightings for the first seven months of 2026, with some regions like Routt County seeing increases of over 200%. Officials note that as bears enter hyperphagia—a phase of intense eating to prepare for hibernation—they may become more aggressive or persistent in seeking human-related food sources such as trash and pet food.
