Colorado begins mailing midterm election ballots

Colorado counties have begun mailing ballots for the November 3 midterm election. Under a new state law, election clerks can distribute ballots up to a week earlier than in previous years. In La Plata County, nearly 44,000 ballots are scheduled for mailing this Friday.

The upcoming ballot is noted for its length, driven in part by numerous statewide and local initiatives. Political group Advance Colorado has been identified as a major influence, using ballot initiatives to advance conservative policies. Investigations indicate that in 2022, approximately $11 million moved through the group's network, with $9 million of that amount remaining anonymous.

To receive a ballot by mail, Colorado residents must be registered by October 26. Voters can also register through Election Day but must vote in person if they register after the mail-in deadline. The Secretary of State reported that as of September 1, there were over 576,000 inactive registered voters in the state.
