Colorado congressional races could impact U.S. House majority

Key congressional races in Colorado are emerging as pivotal contests that could influence the Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. With the GOP currently holding 218 seats and Democrats holding 214, the outcome of these local elections carries significant weight for national party control.

In Colorado’s 1st Congressional District, Democratic-Socialist candidate Melat Kiros is campaigning on platforms including Medicare for all, universal childcare, and increased taxes on wealthy Americans. Kiros, an attorney, has raised over $1 million primarily through individual donations. Her platform also includes calls to abolish U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and ending military conflicts.

In Colorado’s 8th Congressional District, incumbent Republican Gabe Evans faces Democratic challenger Manny Rutinel. This race is expected to be highly competitive, as Evans previously won by a margin of less than 1%. The contest has attracted nearly $11 million in outside spending, with Republican-leaning groups outspending Democratic groups by approximately $2 million. During recent debates, the candidates exchanged accusations of radicalism regarding tax and spending policies.
