Colorado Democratic Socialist Melat Kiros Challenges Rep. Diana DeGette in 1st District Primary

After a series of upset victories by progressive candidates in New York, the movement set its sights on Colorado’s 1st Congressional District. Melat Kiros, a 29‑year‑old democratic socialist and attorney, is running against 15‑term incumbent Democrat Diana DeGette for the Denver seat. Kiros told CNN that voters see the party leadership failing to meet the moment and want leaders who will fight for working‑people interests.

Long‑time Democratic strategist Ted Trimpa cautioned Democrats not to read too much into the New York results, noting that Colorado’s electorate is half unaffiliated and often favors moderate candidates. Governor Jared Polis was recently censured by the state Democratic Party for granting clemency to election denier Tina Peters, and the state’s two senators face criticism for past votes supporting former President Donald Trump’s cabinet members.

Justice Democrats and allied groups quickly organized fundraising and phone‑banking efforts to support Kiros. A third candidate, University of Colorado Regent Wanda James, qualified for the ballot by gathering signatures. The race also highlights Kiros’s outspoken criticism of U.S. policy toward Israel, a point that has drawn additional attention to the contest.
