Colorado fall foliage faces impact from drought and warmth

Colorado’s autumn foliage season faces challenges due to persistent drought and unusually warm weather. Experts suggest that the lack of moisture and abnormal temperatures may result in less vibrant colors and a shorter season than usual. Trees are reportedly shedding leaves early as a survival mechanism to conserve water, rather than following the typical orderly seasonal shutdown.

Despite these environmental stressors, several scenic routes remain popular for viewing the changing landscape. Notable drives include Kebler Pass, which traverses one of North America’s largest aspen stands, and the San Juan Skyway, which includes the Million Dollar Highway. Other significant routes include Independence Pass, the highest paved crossing of the Continental Divide in the state, and the Top of the Rockies Scenic Byway near Aspen.
