Colorado Governor requests federal disaster aid for flooding
Colorado Governor Jared Polis has requested a major disaster declaration from President Donald Trump following severe storms and flooding in Southwest Colorado. The request specifically targets Archuleta and Rio Grande counties to address damage caused by heavy rainfall and debris flows between October 22 and 25.
Officials have documented approximately $27 million in eligible damages so far, a figure expected to rise as inspections continue. If approved, the declaration would grant access to FEMA funding through the Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation Grant programs. These funds would support debris removal, repairs to roads, bridges, and water systems, and infrastructure improvements designed to reduce future flood risks.
Governor Polis stated that the documented damage exceeds the capacity of state and local resources to manage alone. While the formal approval timeline is uncertain, the governor noted that ongoing repair efforts will proceed regardless of when the federal aid is finalized.
