Colorado officials contest DOJ election monitoring in Adams County

The Colorado Secretary of State’s Office has challenged the U.S. Department of Justice’s plan to deploy election monitors to Adams County on Election Day. Deputy Secretary of State Andrew Kline stated in a letter to the DOJ that observers must request and receive permission to access non-public election spaces, such as areas where mail ballots are processed and signatures are verified.

Under updated election rules, approved observers will be prohibited from handling voting equipment, communicating with voters, or recording election activities via photo, video, or audio. The DOJ previously notified officials in Adams and Douglas counties of its intent to send observers, though it later retracted the notice for Douglas County.

In a separate development regarding voter turnout, Colorado officials have recommended that voters mail their ballots no later than Monday, Oct. 26, to ensure timely delivery. As of Oct. 22, approximately 661,879 Coloradans—about 16% of registered voters—had returned their ballots. Data shows Democrats have participated at a higher rate (22%) compared to Republicans (18%) and unaffiliated voters (13%).
