Colorado officials credit rapid response for containing Willow Fire

Colorado officials are credited the rapid response of firefighters for preventing more severe damage during an intense wildfire season driven by extreme drought and record heat. Governor Jared Polis visited Leadville to meet with first responders who managed the Willow Fire, which burned more than 7,500 acres in densely forested terrain at approximately 10,000 feet.

The Willow Fire is currently 80% contained. While officials do not expect it to threaten local infrastructure or the town of Leadville, the fire is expected to continue burning into the winter. During the visit, Lake County Sheriff Heath Speckman noted that emergency officials successfully evacuated about 800 residents from their homes and dozens of people from backcountry trails near Mount Elbert and the Continental Divide Trail.

The response involved coordination between local, state, and federal agencies, including incident management teams deployed by the National Interagency Fire Center. Local emergency management officials described the multi-agency cooperation as highly effective in managing the blaze.
