Colorado Parks and Wildlife faces allegations of election influence

Eric Washburn, president of Colorado Hunters and Anglers for Sensible Wildlife Conservation, has filed a petition requesting an independent investigation into the Colorado Wildlife Council. The petition alleges that the council, a marketing and education body under Colorado Parks and Wildlife, misused funds to influence Amendment 83, a November ballot measure that would establish a constitutional right to hunt and fish.

The Fair Campaign Practices Act prohibits state agencies and councils from spending money to urge voters for or against statewide ballot issues. In response to the allegations, Colorado Parks and Wildlife Director Laura Clellan has paused the council’s release of advertising and promotional materials until after the election, describing it as a “conservative determination” to avoid potential liability. Clellan has also submitted a request for an advisory opinion from the Secretary of State.
