Pilot Nicholas Dale Killed in Colorado Wildfire Helicopter Crash
A Kaman K‑1200 (K‑MAX) firefighting helicopter owned by Helicopter Express crashed inverted into the Silver Jack Reservoir in southwestern Colorado while battling the Gold Mountain Fire. The only occupant, 56‑year‑old pilot Nicholas Dale of Sooke, British Columbia, was recovered dead by divers. Colorado Governor Jared Polis said the state would fly flags at half‑staff and expressed support for firefighters and families.
The Gold Mountain Fire had burned roughly 36,000–57,000 acres and was about 11–13% contained at the time. More than 170 residents remained under evacuation orders. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are leading the investigation. Dale’s death marks the fourth wildfire‑related firefighter fatality in Colorado this summer, prompting public processions through Gunnison, Montrose and Grand Junction.
The incident occurred amid a broader pattern of large western wildfires across Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and eight other states, with fire‑weather concerns heightened by prolonged hot, dry conditions.
