Colorado pilot program tests weather enhancement technology
The Upper Yampa Water Conservancy District is launching a one-year pilot program to test experimental weather enhancement technology designed to increase snowpack and rainfall. The project will cover nearly 200,000 acres in Northwest Colorado’s Flat Tops region, including the Yampa River headwaters.
Funded by a $100,000 grant from the Colorado Water Conservation Board, the initiative will utilize ground-based, solar-powered technology provided by Rain Enhancement Technologies. This marks the ninth permitted weather modification project in Colorado, joining existing cloud-seeding efforts at various ski resorts and in Weld County.
Andy Rossi, general manager of the Upper Yampa district, described the technology as “brand new and experimental,” noting the necessity of exploring new methods as the region faces increasingly dry conditions. The project aims to research the effectiveness of the technology for potential long-term use.
